Introduction
A song can generate two different streams of royalties at the same time: one for the sound recording and another for the underlying composition. The recording is identified by an ISRC (International Standard Recording Code), while the composition is identified by an ISWC (International Standard Musical Work Code). On their own, both codes are useful. The crucial payment mechanism is the link between them. When databases can connect a recording’s ISRC to the correct composition’s ISWC, royalties can be routed to labels, performers, songwriters and publishers. When that connection is missing, incomplete or disputed, money can be delayed, held for research, or distributed incorrectly. The two codes behind every paid song
The music industry treats recordings and compositions as separate assets because they represent different rights.
An ISRC identifies a specific sound recording or music video. It follows the recording throughout its life, regardless of format or release configuration. A remaster, remix or alternate version may require a different ISRC because it is a different recording. The code is designed to identify the master recording, not the song itself. IFPI [2ifpi-isrc]isrc.ifpi.orgifpi-isrcWhen Not To AssignISRC is used to identify sound recordings and music videos only. ISRC should not be used to identify other ite…
An ISWC identifies the musical work: the melody, lyrics and composition that exist independently of any particular recording. One song can have a single ISWC even when it has dozens of recordings by different artists. The ISWC is used by collective management organisations and publishers to identify the work and help allocate songwriter and publisher royalties. What recording identifiers do
When a stream, download, broadcast or other use is reported, the recording side of the industry usually begins with the ISRC.
Streaming platforms, distributors, labels, neighbouring-rights organisations and many reporting systems use the ISRC to determine which recording was used. Because each recording has its own code, usage data can be aggregated accurately across services and territories. Missing or invalid ISRCs can create significant royalty-tracking problems and payment delays. Consider a familiar song recorded by multiple artists. Each recording receives its own ISRC because each recording has different performers, recording owners and commercial histories. What it does not answer is: “Which composition sits underneath that recording?” That requires a different identifier and a link between the two datasets. What composition identifiers do
The ISWC operates on the publishing side of music rights.
Instead of identifying a recording session or master file, it identifies the composition itself and connects that work to songwriter and publisher information. The code helps distinguish one musical work from another, even when titles are similar or identical. It also allows societies around the world to recognise the same composition when collecting and distributing royalties internationally. A useful way to think about the system is that a composition may have many recordings. A classic song might be released as an original studio recording, a live version, a cover version, an acoustic version and several remixes. Each recording can have its own ISRC, but they may all point back to the same ISWC if they use the same underlying composition. Where the recording-to-work link fails
The most important payment step is not assigning an ISRC or assigning an ISWC. It is connecting them correctly.
A streaming service can know exactly which recording was played because it has the ISRC. Yet publishing royalties still require identification of the corresponding musical work. If the recording metadata does not connect to the correct ISWC and associated ownership information, the publishing side cannot be paid automatically. Several common failure points appear across the industry:
- Recording delivered before composition data is complete. New releases often reach services before all songwriter registrations are finalised.
- Multiple claims for the same work. Conflicting ownership information can prevent automated matching.
- Missing identifiers. A recording may have an ISRC but no reliable connection to a registered work.
- Duplicate or incorrect metadata. Different databases may contain inconsistent information about the same song. [arXiv]arxiv.orgarXiv Towards an Open and Scalable Music Metadata LayerarXiv Towards an Open and Scalable Music Metadata Layer
When these failures occur, royalty administrators may move funds into suspense accounts, hold payments pending research, or rely on manual matching processes. The result is slower and less accurate royalty distribution. [arXiv]arxiv.orgarXiv Towards an Open and Scalable Music Metadata LayerarXiv Towards an Open and Scalable Music Metadata Layer
Why the link matters more than either code alone
Neither identifier was designed to replace the other.
The ISRC identifies a recording but cannot identify the composition behind it. The ISWC identifies a composition but cannot identify every recording that uses it. The royalty system becomes efficient only when both identifiers are connected through reliable metadata. In practical terms, the ISRC tells the industry what was played, while the ISWC helps determine who wrote it and who should receive publishing income. The link between them is the bridge that allows usage data to become royalty payments. Without that bridge, even perfectly tracked listening activity can fail to reach the correct songwriter, publisher, performer or rights owner. For that reason, one of the most important pieces of music metadata is often invisible to listeners: the connection between the recording code and the composition code. That single relationship frequently determines whether revenue moves smoothly through the system or becomes another unmatched royalty waiting to be claimed.
