Why streams abroad pay differently
International streams can expand an artist's reach, but territory prices and ad markets change what those plays are worth.

Introduction
A stream from another country does not automatically earn the same royalty as a stream at home. Although music platforms count plays globally, the money behind those plays is generated locally. Subscription prices differ between countries, advertising markets vary widely, and streaming services usually calculate royalties from territory-specific revenue pools before allocating shares to rights holders. As a result, one million streams concentrated in a high-income subscription market can generate a different amount of revenue from one million streams concentrated in a lower-priced or advertising-supported market. Spotify, for example, notes that royalty outcomes vary according to factors including the listener’s country, subscription plan and overall streaming activity. [Spotify for Artists]artists.spotify.comSpotify for ArtistsRoyalties GuideWhile Premium streams add more value to the pool, payouts may vary depending on factors like the listen…
For artists, this means that international success is about more than adding listeners. Where those listeners are located can significantly influence how streaming income develops over time.
How territory royalty pools are formed
Most major streaming services do not operate with a fixed global payment rate per stream. Instead, they collect subscription and advertising revenue in individual markets and then distribute a share of those revenues according to listening share, often called “streamshare”. If an artist accounts for 1% of streams in a territory, they generally receive roughly 1% of the royalty pool allocated to music rights holders in that market. This system creates an important distinction between audience size and audience value. A stream contributes to the royalty pool generated in the country where it occurred, not to a single worldwide pot. Consequently:
- Streams from countries with higher subscription revenues contribute to larger royalty pools.
- Streams from markets that rely heavily on advertising contribute to smaller pools because advertising revenue is generally lower than subscription revenue.
- The same song can generate different average royalty outcomes depending on the geographic mix of its audience. [Spotify for Artists]artists.spotify.comSpotify for ArtistsRoyalties GuideWhile Premium streams add more value to the pool, payouts may vary depending on factors like the listen…
This is one reason industry observers caution against quoting a universal “per-stream rate”. Streaming platforms themselves argue that such figures can be misleading because royalties depend on market-specific revenue and listening behaviour rather than a fixed price attached to each play. Subscription prices and ad demand by market
The biggest reason streams abroad pay differently is that consumers do not pay the same subscription price everywhere.
Streaming services adjust pricing to local economic conditions, competition and purchasing power. Premium subscriptions in wealthier markets often cost substantially more than equivalent plans in emerging markets. Since subscription revenue remains the largest component of streaming income globally, these differences directly affect royalty pools. IFPI reports that paid subscription streaming now accounts for more than half of global recorded music revenues, highlighting the importance of subscription economics in determining artist payments. Advertising-supported listening introduces another layer of variation. Advertising rates depend on local advertising demand, consumer spending power and the maturity of the digital advertising market. A free-tier stream in a country with strong advertising competition may generate more revenue than a comparable stream in a market where advertisers spend less online. Spotify’s royalty explanations explicitly note that Premium listening contributes more value to royalty pools than advertising-supported listening. [Spotify for Artists]artists.spotify.comSpotify for ArtistsRoyalties GuideWhile Premium streams add more value to the pool, payouts may vary depending on factors like the listen…
As a result, two artists with identical global stream counts may see different incomes if one audience is concentrated in high-subscription, high-advertising markets while the other is concentrated in lower-revenue territories.
Why more global listeners can still increase earnings
Different market values do not mean international audiences are less important. In many cases, global reach increases income even when some territories generate lower average revenue per stream.
First, international audiences expand the total number of monetised listeners. Streaming allows artists to reach markets that would previously have been inaccessible without local radio, physical distribution or major-label infrastructure. The global growth of paid subscriptions has steadily expanded the size of royalty pools worldwide. Recorded music revenues have risen for more than a decade, largely driven by streaming adoption across multiple regions. Second, international growth often diversifies revenue sources. An artist whose audience spans North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia is less dependent on the performance of a single market. Fast-growing regions can become meaningful contributors even if average revenue per stream remains lower than in the largest subscription markets. IFPI data shows strong recent growth in regions such as Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, driven primarily by streaming adoption. Third, global discovery can create long-term value beyond the initial stream. International audiences often lead to touring opportunities, merchandise sales, licensing deals and future fan spending that are not reflected in the royalty generated by a single play.
A practical example of audience mix
Imagine two independent artists who each receive ten million streams in a year.
Artist A receives most streams from countries with high Premium subscription penetration and relatively expensive subscription plans. Artist B receives most streams from markets where subscriptions are cheaper and free-tier listening represents a larger share of consumption.
Both artists may achieve the same stream count, yet Artist A could generate a larger royalty share because the underlying revenue pools are larger. The difference does not arise from the song itself but from the economic characteristics of the territories where listeners are located. This is why industry analyses frequently emphasise listener geography when discussing streaming earnings. Why geography remains important in a borderless music world
Streaming has made music consumption global, but the economics behind that consumption remain local. Revenue is generated through country-specific subscription prices, advertising markets and licensing arrangements before being distributed according to streamshare. A listener in another country can be just as valuable culturally as a listener at home, yet the financial contribution of that stream may differ because the underlying market generates a different amount of revenue. The result is a central reality of modern streaming: worldwide audiences increase opportunity, but the value of those plays depends not only on how many people listen, but also on where they listen from.
