Why film music needs double clearance
Putting a track under moving images usually means clearing the composition and the specific recording separately.

Introduction
One of the clearest examples of why music rights are complicated appears when music is paired with moving images. A film scene, television programme, advert, video game trailer or online video may seem to use “a song”, but legally it often uses two separate copyrights at once: the underlying musical composition and a specific sound recording. That split creates the need for multiple permissions, multiple negotiations and sometimes multiple owners. A production company cannot usually assume that securing one right automatically grants the other. This is why music supervisors, advertisers and filmmakers talk about “double clearance” before a track can appear on screen. What synchronisation rights cover
A synchronisation licence, usually shortened to a sync licence, is the permission to combine a musical composition with visual content. The licence covers the song itself—the melody, lyrics and musical work—not necessarily any particular recording of it. If a song is used under a dramatic scene, in a television title sequence, behind an advert, or inside a video game cut-scene, a sync licence is generally required because the music is being synchronised with images. This discretion explains why music choices can become creative, legal and financial decisions at the same time. A rights holder may agree to a song appearing in a documentary but refuse its use in a political campaign or controversial advertisement. The licence is not merely a payment mechanism; it is also a permission mechanism. [support.easysong.com]support.easysong.com360047681973 What is a Synchronization Sync LicenseIf you're pairing music…
Why master-use permission is separate
A sync licence alone is often insufficient because most productions want to use a recognisable recording rather than create a new one. The famous version of a song—the version listeners know from radio, streaming or records—is protected by a separate copyright in the sound recording, commonly called the master. To use that recording, the producer usually needs a master-use licence in addition to the sync licence. A useful illustration is a classic hit song in an advert. If the advertiser wants the original recording that audiences instantly recognise, it must usually clear both the publishing side and the master side. However, if the advertiser commissions a new cover version, the original master recording is not being used. In that situation the master licence for the original recording may no longer be required, although the composition rights still need clearance. This distinction explains why advertisements frequently use newly recorded versions of well-known songs. Re-recording can reduce costs, simplify negotiations or give the campaign a different creative tone while still using the underlying composition. The composition remains protected, but the expensive or difficult-to-clear original master can be avoided. Why clearance can become surprisingly complex
The challenge is not only that two licences are needed. Each side may have multiple owners.
A contemporary pop song may have several songwriters, multiple publishers, featured performers and a record label. Depending on contractual arrangements, every relevant rights holder may need to approve the use before the deal can proceed. Industry guidance often refers to this as the need to clear 100 per cent of the rights. One missing approval can delay or stop a placement altogether. This is one reason why music supervisors value so-called “one-stop” catalogues, where a single entity controls both publishing and master rights. Such catalogues reduce transaction costs and speed up negotiations because fewer parties need to be contacted. For independent artists, owning both the composition and the master can make their music more attractive for sync opportunities. Territories, platforms and time limits
A sync licence is rarely a simple yes-or-no permission. Most agreements specify exactly where, how and for how long the music may be used. These terms have major commercial consequences. A local television advert running for three months in one country will normally command a different fee from a global advertising campaign running across television, streaming services, social media and cinema screens for several years. The same song may therefore be licensed multiple times under different terms for different projects. The rise of streaming has made these distinctions even more important. Productions are no longer confined to a single broadcaster or territory. A series commissioned for one market may eventually become available worldwide, requiring rights that anticipate international distribution from the outset. Why adverts often involve the highest scrutiny
Advertising uses attract particularly careful rights management because music can become closely associated with a brand. Rights holders may evaluate not only the fee offered but also the identity of the advertiser, the product category and the campaign message. A songwriter or artist may welcome association with one brand while refusing another. From the advertiser’s perspective, music can be one of the most valuable creative assets in a campaign. A familiar recording can instantly establish emotion, nostalgia or cultural recognition. Because of that value, major advertising placements often involve extensive negotiations covering exclusivity, territory, duration and future campaign extensions. The result is a licensing environment where legal ownership, creative approval and commercial strategy intersect. A track may be artistically perfect for an advert yet unavailable because one rights holder objects, demands different terms or controls only part of the rights package. The central lesson of sync rights
Synchronisation licensing exposes the underlying architecture of music copyright more clearly than almost any other use. What appears to audiences as a single song often consists of separate rights that must be cleared independently. The composition requires synchronisation permission; the recording requires master-use permission. Add multiple owners, global distribution, platform-specific rights and negotiated time limits, and the seemingly simple act of placing music under a scene becomes a complex rights exercise. That need for double clearance is one of the most practical reasons music rights remain difficult to navigate in film, television and advertising.
