Introduction
Streaming did more than make music available everywhere. It changed the basic question listeners ask before pressing play. During the album era, people often chose a record by artist, genre or release. In the streaming era, many listeners start with a situation: working, travelling, exercising, cooking, relaxing or trying to sleep. Playlists became the ideal tool for that shift because they organise music around moods, activities and moments rather than around a single artist’s creative project. Research on streaming behaviour consistently shows that listeners use recommendation systems, personalised mixes and curated playlists to fit music into everyday routines, while platforms increasingly design their services around those listening contexts. Albums remain culturally important and still attract dedicated listening, especially around major releases. Yet for much of daily listening, playlists have become the default unit of organisation because they match how people use music throughout the day. From Album Choice to Activity Choice
For much of the twentieth century, albums structured music consumption. Physical formats encouraged listeners to engage with a set sequence of songs because records, cassettes and CDs were sold as complete products. Choosing music often meant choosing an artist’s album.
Streaming weakened that structure. With millions of songs available instantly, listeners no longer needed to commit to a single record for an hour. Instead, they could choose music according to what they were doing at that moment. A commuter might want energetic songs, a student might want concentration music, and a runner might want a steady tempo. Playlists answer those needs more directly than albums. [American Journal of Qualitative Research]ajqr.orgMusic streaming services have become the primary source for listeners to access music daily. Qualitative interviews were conducted to und…
This change is visible in how streaming services present music. Rather than asking users to browse discographies first, platforms prominently feature personalised mixes, daily recommendations and activity-based collections. Ofcom’s research on UK audio habits found that personal curation is the most common way users choose music on streaming services, reflecting a listening culture built around customised selections rather than fixed album experiences. [www.ofcom.org.uk]ofcom.org.ukaudio report 2026Report 202620 May 2026 — In this year's Audio Survey, we asked listeners of each music streaming service how they choose their music on t…
The result is a subtle but important historical shift. The organising principle moves from “Which album do I want?” to “What do I need music to do right now?”
Mood, Focus and Routine Playlists
One reason playlists became dominant is that they fit naturally into recurring routines.
Many people now use music as part of everyday task management. A playlist can be designed for focus, relaxation, exercise, studying, commuting or sleep. These categories are flexible and reusable. Unlike an album, which reflects a specific artistic statement, a playlist can be endlessly updated while continuing to serve the same purpose. Streaming platforms reinforced this behaviour by building recommendation systems around moods and contexts. Services such as Spotify and Deezer generate personalised streams and mood-based mixes that adapt to listening history and user behaviour. Deezer’s development of mood-specific recommendation systems illustrates how major platforms increasingly treat emotional state and activity as key organising categories for music discovery. Research into streaming practices suggests that listeners actively combine personal preferences with algorithmic suggestions to create desired emotional environments. Rather than searching for a particular album, users often seek a particular feeling or outcome. This has made playlists especially effective for background listening. Whether music accompanies office work, household tasks or travel, the goal is often continuity rather than focused engagement with a specific artistic work. A playlist can provide that continuity more easily than a sequence of separate albums. Why Streaming Services Favoured Playlists
The rise of playlists was not only driven by listeners. It was also encouraged by platform design.
Streaming services can update playlists constantly, personalise them for individual users and connect them directly to recommendation algorithms. Personalised playlists such as Discover Weekly, Daily Mixes and similar features encourage regular return visits because the content changes over time. Research has shown that curated playlists significantly influence listening behaviour and music discovery. Professionally curated playlists can direct attention toward particular songs and artists, often more effectively than traditional browsing. The playlist format also produces valuable behavioural data. Every skip, replay, save and completion helps platforms learn what listeners prefer in specific situations. Recommendation systems then use that information to generate increasingly tailored listening experiences. As streaming evolved, playlists became more than collections of songs. They became interfaces through which recommendation systems interact with listeners.
What Songs Lose Outside Album Context
The success of playlists has created an ongoing debate about what is gained and lost when listening shifts away from albums.
Albums often tell stories through sequencing, recurring themes and carefully planned transitions. Songs can take on different meanings when heard alongside the tracks that surround them. Removing a song from that context may weaken the narrative or emotional arc intended by the artist.
Critics of playlist-centred listening argue that it encourages music to be consumed in fragments rather than as complete works. Writers and researchers have noted concerns that mood-based and algorithmically curated listening can prioritise convenience and continuity over deeper engagement with artists’ creative intentions. Genre boundaries can also become less important. Traditional music discovery often happened through genre categories or artist catalogues. Playlist culture instead groups songs according to atmosphere, energy or function. A “focus” playlist may combine electronic music, classical recordings and ambient tracks that would previously have lived in separate musical worlds. [The New Yorker]newyorker.comThe New Yorker Genre Is DisappearingWhat Comes Next?March 8, 2021 — With the dissolution of traditional music genres, the Grammy nominations have sparked disputes, like Just…
Yet many listeners see this flexibility as an advantage rather than a loss. Playlists allow songs from different eras, genres and artists to coexist in ways that reflect personal taste and daily life rather than record-shop categories. Why Albums Survived Despite the Playlist Era
Playlists replaced albums in much everyday listening, but they did not eliminate them.
Major album releases still generate cultural events, fan communities and concentrated listening sessions. Many listeners continue to turn to albums when they want a deeper experience, to understand an artist’s vision or to engage with music as an artwork rather than as a soundtrack to another activity.
What changed is the role albums play. For routine listening, playlists often offer greater convenience because they adapt to moods and activities. Albums increasingly occupy a different space: intentional listening rather than background listening, immersion rather than utility.
That distinction helps explain why playlists became the new default. They are better suited to the fragmented, mobile and activity-driven patterns of everyday life that streaming services were built to support.
