Introduction

Spotify’s Loud & Clear reports are among the most cited datasets in arguments about streaming economics because they appear to answer a simple question: is streaming generating meaningful money for music? On that narrow question, the figures are powerful evidence. They show that Spotify has become a major source of industry revenue, paying more than US$11 billion to the music industry in 2025 and nearly US$70 billion over its lifetime. They also show growing numbers of artists reaching significant royalty thresholds. Spotify [Reuters At the same time]reuters.comThis represented a more than 10% increase from the previous year. Half of the royalties went to independent artists and labels, underlini…, Loud & Clear does not reveal what most creators actually take home. The data tracks royalties generated on Spotify before those payments pass through labels, publishers, distributors, managers, collaborators and other contractual arrangements. As a result, the report proves that large sums are flowing through streaming, but it does not settle the separate question of whether individual artists and songwriters are earning a fair living.

What the headline payout figures measure

The strongest contribution of Loud & Clear is that it provides a rare platform-level view of streaming revenue. Spotify’s reports document how much money the service distributes to music rightsholders and how many artists cross various royalty thresholds. Recent editions highlight that more than 13,800 artists generated at least US$100,000 from Spotify in 2025, while more than 1,500 generated over US$1 million. [Loud and Clear]loudandclear.byspotify.comLoud and Clear TakeawaysLoud and ClearTakeaways - Loud and ClearIn 2025, there were more than 13,800 artists who generated at least $100,000* a year from Spotify…

These figures demonstrate several things that are difficult to dispute:

  • Streaming has become a large-scale revenue source for recorded music. [musiciansunion.org.uk]musiciansunion.org.ukmusic streaming royaltiesRoyalties for Streaming Music | The MU22 Apr 2026 — At least 92% of musicians say that less than 5% of their earnings comes from online s…
  • Total payouts have grown substantially over time.
  • Significant numbers of artists now generate meaningful royalties from Spotify alone.
  • Independent artists and labels account for a large share of royalties, roughly half according to Spotify’s reporting. Spotify [reuters]reuters.comThis represented a more than 10% increase from the previous year. Half of the royalties went to independent artists and labels, underlini… The dataset is also useful for tracking structural changes. Loud & Clear has repeatedly shown growth in the number of artists reaching income thresholds ranging from US$10,000 to millions of dollars per year. Spotify argues this reflects the emergence of a broader middle tier rather than growth being captured exclusively by global superstars. Spotify [Loud and Clear]loudandclear.byspotify.comLoud and Clear TakeawaysLoud and ClearTakeaways - Loud and ClearIn 2025, there were more than 13,800 artists who generated at least $100,000* a year from Spotify…

As evidence about the size and expansion of the streaming economy, the figures are valuable. They establish that streaming is not a niche revenue source and that substantial royalty pools exist.

Why gross royalties differ from artist income

The most important limitation of Loud & Clear is that its headline numbers are gross royalty figures rather than creator earnings.

Spotify pays rightsholders according to streamshare, meaning royalties are allocated based on a catalogue’s share of listening activity. The company states that it distributes roughly two-thirds of music revenue to recording and publishing rightsholders. Those payments are then divided according to separate contractual arrangements that Spotify does not control and often cannot see. [Spotify for Artists]artists.spotify.comSpotify for ArtistsRoyalties GuideWe pay rightsholders based on streamshare — their share of total streams in a given month. E.g., if an…

This distinction matters because a reported royalty figure can represent very different outcomes for different creators.

For example, a track generating US$100,000 in Spotify royalties may involve:

  • A record label receiving the payment first.
  • Recoupment of advances or marketing costs.
  • Multiple performers sharing recording income.
  • Separate songwriter and publisher splits.
  • Management commissions and administration fees.
  • Taxes and collection costs.

After those deductions, the amount reaching any one individual may be far lower than the royalty figure shown in Loud & Clear. Spotify itself notes that it has no visibility into the agreements that determine final payments to artists and songwriters. This is why critics often argue that platform payout statistics and creator income statistics answer different questions. A growing royalty pool does not automatically prove that revenue is being distributed equitably across the industry.

How income thresholds frame the streaming debate

One of Loud & Clear’s most influential features is its use of earnings thresholds. Spotify highlights how many artists generate at least US$10,000, US$100,000, US$1 million or even US$10 million annually from the platform. These thresholds are intended to show that streaming supports a widening range of professional careers. [Loud and Clear]loudandclear.byspotify.comLoud and Clear TakeawaysLoud and ClearTakeaways - Loud and ClearIn 2025, there were more than 13,800 artists who generated at least $100,000* a year from Spotify…

The same figures, however, can support opposing interpretations.

Supporters view them as evidence that streaming has created opportunities unavailable in earlier eras. They point to the increasing number of artists reaching professional income levels and to the growing presence of independent and international acts among royalty earners. [Loud and Clear]loudandclear.byspotify.comLoud and Clear TakeawaysLoud and ClearTakeaways - Loud and ClearIn 2025, there were more than 13,800 artists who generated at least $100,000* a year from Spotify… Spotify Critics focus on the denominator. Millions of artists and uploaders now compete for attention on streaming platforms. The debate therefore turns on what threshold is considered meaningful. A figure such as US$100,000 in annual Spotify-generated royalties may appear substantial, yet it can represent a full band, a shared catalogue, or income that must still be divided among multiple stakeholders. Conversely, supporters argue that gross royalty generation is the appropriate measure because Spotify cannot account for downstream contracts. The evidence Loud & Clear cannot provide

Despite its transparency ambitions, Loud & Clear leaves several key questions unanswered. [loudandclear.byspotify.com]loudandclear.byspotify.comLoud and Clear TakeawaysLoud and ClearTakeaways - Loud and ClearIn 2025, there were more than 13,800 artists who generated at least $100,000* a year from Spotify…

It does not reveal:

  • Average take-home income for artists or songwriters.
  • The effect of specific label or publishing contracts.
  • How revenue is distributed within bands or collaborations.
  • The proportion of artists who rely on non-streaming income.
  • Whether streaming income alone can sustain a typical professional career.
  • Differences in outcomes across genres, territories and career stages. Spotify [The Guardian]theguardian.comThe Guardian Spotify is trumpeting big paydays for artistsThe 2024 report claims that Spotify paid out $10bn in royalties last year, but the report's timing is contentious due to recent revelatio…

Nor does the dataset directly address normative questions about fairness. It can show that payouts are increasing, but it cannot determine whether creators receive an appropriate share of the value generated by their work.

That distinction explains why Loud & Clear remains central to the streaming debate. The data convincingly demonstrates that Spotify has become a major engine of music-industry revenue. What it does not demonstrate is how much of that revenue ultimately reaches the individual creators whose music generated it. The gap between those two measurements is where most of the controversy over streaming economics continues to live.
